On 24-25 April 2008, the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine and the International Commission for the Protection of the Rhine jointly organised a workshop in Strasbourg.

Best practices were discussed by 70 experts to better match shipping and habitat protection. Notwithstanding the diverging opinions between environmental and transport stakeholders, it was positively surprising that both detected a great potential for win-win projects. Concrete proposals and recommendations have been elaborated by working groups of experts of different competences.

As a follow-up, the river commissions will strengthen cooperation and coordination on this issue, and they plan to include the challenges related to climate change.
