More than a third of Europe’s food and agro products are transported by trucks. In a globalised world, the product variety on the market ever increases but the distance between producers and consumers also continues to rise. Today harvested in Africa, America or Asia, tomorrow on your plate.
During the last twenty years, transport of food and agro products on the road has doubled. The Interreg project Agroship helps shippers to use the waterway to overcome troubled supply chains. No congestion, economic benefits and unexpected innovative solutions. The platform does not provide direct grants, but bright new ideas can count on expert advice and support. Today, Agroship presents the first successful pilots of potatoes and rice transported by inland barge.
The project covers 4 steps:
| Step 1: |
make shippers aware of waterbound opportunities |
| Step 2: |
create logistics concepts and framework conditions for efficient transport by waterway |
| Step 3: |
organize pilots |
| Step 4: |
dissemination campaign to reach more actors and to enable an effective modal shift |
