| The Rhine/Meuse-Maine-Danube waterways, home to over 200 million people, cross 14 countries and connect the North Sea with the Black Sea over water. Enlargement leads to a spectacular rise in trade exchanges between western and eastern Europe. Freight traffic is to double from now to 2020. A competitive and environmentally friendly transport solution by water will be of strategic importance to keep goods flowing on the continent.

Working with nature
"The Integrated River Engineering Project offers an opportunity to safeguard the ecological quality of the national park in the long term. More than a century after the regulation of the Danube we can now restore much of the river's freedom in a national park".
Carl Manzano, Director of the Danube Floodplain National Park
Strengthening the economy
"The reliability of shipping must be guaranteed all year round. Only then can the Danube play a significant role as a real alternative on the transport market and contribute to strengthening Austria as a business locations".
