Regulations and standards
The main part of EU law for inland waterway transport focuses on regulating the market and the profession, as well as on setting technical and nautical standards with the aim to ensure safety on EU waterways:

River information Services - RIS
In 2005, the EU adopted a framework directive on river information services with the aim to ensure a a harmonised, interoperable and open navigational aid and information system across borders on the EU inland waterway network. The directive formulates the services which Member States should put at the disposal of operators for swift electronic data exchange. RIS is a tool to enhance safe and cost-efficient traffic and transport management.

More than one regulatory framework
In addition to the EU, the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine and the Danube Commission regulate navigation on the rivers Rhine and Danube.
