| Towards zero emissions
High quality diesel with ultra-low sulphur content combined with emission improving technology will progressively reduce emissions by 98%. Nevertheless, new research and pilot projects move away from the exclusive use of conventional fossil fuels and test carbon free and hybrid energy producing zero or near zero emissions. The whole range of alternative energy sources are considered, including biofuels but fuel cell applications seem most promising for the future. Today, high costs, limited lifetime and oversize still present high barriers. But mass production and technological optimization will undoubtedly bring price reductions and more efficiency to help market take up.
Fuel cell technology and all electric ships
Investigations testing fuel cell for on-board use have started. In order to avoid indirect pollution from electricity and hydrogen production, research attaches special attention to renewable energy sources. Full commercialisation of fuel cell technology onboard inland ships is expected by 2015. Diesel and hybrid fuels will most likely bridge the transition period before the widespread introduction of clean hydrogen.
