Mission statement
The European inland waterway network is an arterial system that reaches deep into the heart of many towns and cities, providing a vital link between coastal areas and producers and consumers in heartland Europe. INE firmly believes in the strong potential of inland waterway transport to contribute to the competitiveness and sustainability of a modern and innovative economy. By exchanging best practices, advocating pro-competitive policy measures and communicating to our target audiences, we aim at strengthening the development and advantages of this transportation means to the benefit of a more balanced transport system.
Some of our achievements
When INE started, inland waterways did not count in EU policy. INE has immediately started to actively work towards a comprehensive policy programme to bolster the development potential of inland waterway transport. This plan, the NAIADES programme 2006-2013, was published in a communication of the European Commission early 2006 and has been endorsed by the EU Member States. It covers market development, fleet innovation, jobs & skills, promotion & cooperation and infrastructure development. A first range of measures has been launched and INE will remain actively committed to its implementation.
